在金融时报网站上看到一稿,说的是国际几大银行间交易的事,其中有这么一段:Goldman’s previous karaoke party may have finished prematurely, but as far as SMFG(三井住友金融集团) is concerned, the agreed merger between UFJ(日联银行) and MTFG(三菱东京银行) isn’t over until the fat lady sings. the fat lady sings 不知是什么意思,请指教。

  一般歌剧结束之前,总有个fat lady出来唱一段,然后才落幕。

Most people, including myself, thought the saying came from opera. In opera, most divas are fat. An opera usually ends when the divas bellows out the final aria. The opera "ain‘t over until the fat lady sings." The phrase comes to mean " something is not over until the fat lady sings." Or " When the fat lady sings, you know it is over."

However, according to another source, this reference to "Fat lady" goes back further than that. I am trying to dig into the old files at http://www.rainlane.com to come up with that reference. Hang in there.

Here is another political cartoon featuring the Fat Lady.
This came out after Al Gore conceded defeat in the last American presidential election.
